On May 2nd it’s an important holiday in Madrid. It is the commemoration, of the day the people rebelled against the occupation by the French Napoleonic troops.
These events led to the Spanish Independence War, which lasted until April 17, 1814.
Since 1983, May 2nd, is celebrated as the Day of the Autonomous Community of Madrid.
Local festivals and communal meals are also held in the different districts of the city, and in the towns surrounding the Capital.
