The commuter rail service for Madrid, the capital and its metropolitan area is called “Cercanías Madrid“. This network now extends across most of the Community of Madrid, reaching localities bordering the provinces of Guadalajara, Segovia, and in the future, also Toledo.
This service is operated Cercanías Renfe, the commuter rail division of RENFE. This rail system, is considered the most modern transport system in Europe.
El Corredor de Henares, is the area on the Henares River valley, located near Madrid, and the direction that goes to Zaragoza and Barcelona.
The major cities of Guadalajara and Alcala de Henares, along with others closer to Madrid, as Coslada, San Fernando de Henares, Torrejón de Ardoz, and some other neighborhoods that are within the city of Madrid, as Vallecas Villa and Vicálvaro, began to grow as large bedroom communities, which depend largely on the railroad to move to Madrid.
The South-West Area
At the same time, the old rural villages of Alcorcón, Móstoles, Leganes, Fuenlabrada, Getafe (and some others), began to grow as bedroom and residential communities.
These centers of population, were based more on bus services and private transport, but the rail service was extended to connect Madrid-Toledo by rail, also reaching the towns of Getafe and Parla. The railroad line covering Madrid – Talavera de la Reina, also served to provide commuter service to Leganes and Fuenlabrada.
In 1976 the wide gauge rail service between Madrid and Móstoles, was opened to replace the narrow track, which closed in 1970.
In the 1980s, a new rail line service, began operating between Madrid, Chamartín Station, and the new town of Tres Cantos, also serving Cantoblanco campus of the Autonomous University of Madrid.
